The correct answer to the question is C.. Annihilate means to completely destroy just as raze means to completely flatten.

Raze is also a favorite word of mine. It's often confused with raise and thus gives an opposite impression to its true meaning.

A note from Jonina Herter - RCS...thanks Jonina!
I am following your posts with a great deal of interest because I think it is very important for children to love language and to hear wonderful words put together to sing, instruct, and just plain amaze. Someone sent me the enclosed article and I think you would find it interesting. Savor, something I think we do too little of with language.

The answer to the first is C a beachhead ... since the question indicates that its a starting point "upon which the negotiators could build"

The answer to the second is B.
Endeavor means to reach for a goal and grasp means to reach for an object.

When I read word challenge, I was expecting some multisyllablistic (lol) monstrosity. Thanks for choosing such simple words that have both simple and complex meaning. This is great for children with budding vocabulary and adults alike. Looking forward to next Monday!

The two paragraphs that we drew the words from.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

and

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
