Getting In vs. Thriving: A Parent’s Guide to Independent School Success
Beyond admissions: this is entry into a particular culture
✨ It was all a dream. That early September morning, we passed through the stone gates with the gold plaque that bore the name of the elite private school along the Hudson River, not as an applicant family, but as an enrolled family. Then, I woke up.
The shift from dream state to the reality of the moment was startling. The admissions process was intense, and as I look back, it was swift—but it also brought us closer as a family. We became one another’s ambassadors, advocating for and declaring each other’s value to people who held our educational aspirations in their hands.
But the moment we crossed into that lower campus, reality layered itself over the dream. Beneath the canopy of trees and polished grounds, I realized I did not fully trust this gilded environment to protect my child from the subtle harms that can accompany numerical imbalance—the social dynamics of classrooms, lunchrooms, and playgrounds where difference can feel isolating.
That was the moment I knew: getting in is only part of the journey. Thriving takes strategy.
For me, the easiest first step was to show up. To show up consistently. Because in independent school culture, relationship-building is not optional—it is a non-negotiable priority for scholar success, family advocacy, and for leveraging the full return on this enormous investment.
Here are five essential opportunities parents and caregivers should prioritize from the very start of the school year:
Back to School Night – Connect with faculty, families, curriculum, and culture; learn about giving and engagement opportunities.
Parents Association Meetings – Gain insight into school life, leadership, and the parent community.
Homecoming – Witness the strength of alumni, family, and student pride—and how it fortifies the institution’s legacy.
Student-Led Events – See firsthand how scholars rise through curiosity, risks, and advocacy.
Annual Fund Participation – More than a donation, your contribution signals voice, commitment, and partnership.
At RIISE, we know that access without advocacy is incomplete. Independent school families—new and returning—must approach each year with intention. Building trust, visibility, and influence within your school community ensures that our scholars don’t just get in—they thrive.
